Update: The Sea Turtle Rehab Center in Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is Closing

The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a major attraction in the area for tourists as well as locals. It features four large outdoor aquariums that represent South Florida marine habitats and a sea turtle rehabilitation center where sick and injured turtles are treated for their illnesses and injuries before being returned to the ocean. The center also has walking trails, a butterfly garden, and educational programs about the natural history of coastal life and wildlife.

The City of Boca Raton is phasing out the turtle rehab program and handing it over to an affiliated non-profit, the Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards, because the work was increasingly deemed outside the scope of municipal government. The Coastal Stewards are working to qualify for an organizational permit that would allow them to continue turtle rehabilitation even in the absence of a staff member who holds the state turtle rehabilitation license.

A majority of the turtles at the facility suffer from fibropapilloma (FP), tumors that resemble cauliflower, and impede their ability to swim or find food. The condition often affects turtles in lagoons and bays close to densely populated areas that have runoff filled with fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, and other pollutants that deteriorate water quality. The Coastal Stewards are looking to acquire the necessary medical equipment and funding to treat up to 50 new patients each year.

During the last 13 years, Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards, which is a registered non-profit, has funded and operated the turtle rehabilitation program at the nature center. The three key people who operated the program the rehab coordinator, a full-time sea turtle specialist, and the veterinarian were employed by the city of Boca Raton, which oversees the nature center.

As part of the transition, Boca Raton has begun to remove the turtles from the center and ship them off to other state facilities, including Zoo Miami, Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, and the Florida Oceanographic Society in Stuart. The release of the turtles into the ocean is usually a festive event, with hundreds of visitors cheering as the turtles head back to the sea.

Admission to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is free, although a donation of $4 or more per person is requested at the gate to support the animals and programs offered by the nonprofit. The center is located on a 20-acre protected barrier island, which includes an ecosystem of rare tropical hardwood hammock and mangrove wetlands and has access to the beachfront and Intracoastal Waterway. Guided tours and classes are available. The center is open daily. Several sea turtle events are scheduled throughout the year. For more information, call the nature center at (561) 686-6655.
