Driving on A1A alongside the marshlands and occasional developments you come across Washington Oaks Gardens. The entrance to the Park is unassuming and simply does not do justice to the slice of haven behind it. Unfortunately, some areas were closed when we first visited the Park in January 2023. The closed section included the beach area as well as some areas of the Park. Hurricane Ian has done a number on the area. That said, we still had a grand time visiting the areas that were open to the public. Walking through the winding trails we came across the rose garden with a pathway in the middle of an extensive variety of rose plants. The roses weren’t in bloom at the time of our visit but climbing the walkway to the top was still impressive.
The top of the rose garden continues through some mature trees and a large variety of local vegetation. After a few steps toward the western border of the park we came upon a pleasant surprise, the Matanzas River. The river is very wide with calm waters. Many families were enjoying a gorgeous sunny day with their fishing rods in the water. This is a great area for a day of picnic and fishing for the entire family. The scenery is tranquilizing and relaxing for lazy afternoons.

The Visitor Center is the Original Home of Owen and Louise Young
After reluctantly leaving the Matanzas River area we continued walking and hiking toward the Washington Oaks Park Visitor Center. The Center is a house that originally belonged to Owen and Louise Young. Mrs. Young was personally responsible for designing this 2-bedroom house. There are many short trails in different directions from the Visitors Center.
Special Events Scheduled in Washington Oaks Park During The Holidays
Earth Day in Washington Oaks Park – Celebrating Earth Day takes place on the weekend closest to the original Earth Day of April 22nd. Each occasion bears a theme, for 2022 the theme was “Invest in Our Planet”.
First Friday Walk in Washington Oaks Park – Other events in the Park include the First Friday Garden and History Walk. This event starts at 10:00 am in the parking lot of the Garden area. A ranger guides the Walk and visitors will learn about the history of Washington Oaks Park. The duration of the Walk is around one hour and there is no cost to join.
Holiday in the Gardens – What a great way to start the holiday season with a day in the park. Many activities are planned each year to celebrate the Holidays in the Garden at Washington State Park. The food trucks offer a variety of delicious food. For a family with children, there is a kids’ section to keep them entertained with a play park. There is something for everyone in the gift shop for last-minute gift buying. Other options are to visit the art and craft shows or choose from a variety of plants for sale to support the park. The food and toy drive also takes place on this day. For those who can bring a toy or non-perishable food and make the holiday possible for the less fortunate in the community.
