A.E. Backus and Highway Men PaintingsWhy Visit A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery

The A. E. Backus Museum is dedicated to Florida’s master landscape painter, mentor, and humanitarian, A.E. Bean Backus. The museum showcases the largest selection of Backus’s paintings in the world. Besides his paintings, the A.E. Backus Museum is the home to Highwaymen Paintings. The Highwaymen Paintings refer to paintings by African American artists who copied Backus’s paintings in bold colors. A.E. Backus generously mentored and granted permission to these artists to copy his paintings. His original student as a Highwaymen painter spread the technique to other African American artists. The primary purpose of these paintings was to generate income for artists. The paintings did not offer the quality of  Backus’s work and were painted in a short time. However, some of these paintings became collectors’ items later on commanding high prices.

Peacock Alley

Peacock Park Arts DistrictVisit Peacock Park In Fort Pierce

The first time we visited the Peacock Arts District in search of peacocks we were delighted. The district is located just west of U.S.1 between Orange Avenue and Delaware Avenue. The first peacocks were acquired by Jack Crain, an operator of a travel agency. He had a love of peacocks and the family grew over the years. Today there is a crossing sign for the lovely peacocks to cross the roads they call home. Once we arrived at peacock alley it was easy to spot an abundance of peacocks and beautifully colored chickens. The birds were wandering about the street they declared their home. The proud plumages were on full display. Peacocks can get noisy and alarm when someone is in their presence. A complaint among some of the locals. If you enjoy birds this is a beautiful afternoon stroll.
