History of Dunedin, Florida

Dunedin is the oldest city in Pinellas County as well as the State. A local businessman, George Jones, originally named the area Jonesboro. The name was changed to Dunedin by two Scotsmen, James Somerville, and J.O. Douglas. The name was derived from Gaelic Scottish Dùn Èideann which refers to Edinburgh, Scotland. Sings of the Scottish heritage is still evident in the city. The incorporation of Dunedin took place in 1899. Later in 1925 Dunedin was officially registered as a city.
