As you stroll down the streets, the rhythmic clucking and occasional crowing become part of the area’s soundtrack, adding a touch of cheerfulness to the coastal setting. The chickens, seemingly oblivious to the visitor activity around them, go about their daily routines. They have survived many attempts to remove or relocate them, This includes the 2019 attempts by a Hampton Inn landscaper who wanted to remove the chickens responsible for damaging some of his work. To get the community leaders involved, the concerned citizens signed the following petition to secure the future of these homeless roosters and hens:
“If the Hampton Inn landscaper gets his way, our town may lose a bit of its unique culture. The Landscaper intends to forcibly remove the Flagler Ave Roosters because they have scratched and pecked away at his landscaping. A crime that calls for removal in his opinion, but not in ours.
We believe that the infectious smiles these Roosters provide are not to be underestimated. On any given day, you can witness these pretty birds posing for photos and charming the locals and tourists alike. These harmless chickens can be heard in the mornings and hand-fed; they have nestled into our town and our hearts.
Let’s prevent their almost certain demise by asking our Mayor, Russ Owen to keep the charm alive and save our Roosters. “
