Okeechobee is a small agricultural town located on the northern rim of Lake Okeechobee in central Florida. Lake Okeechobee is fabulous for fishing and boating.  Lake Okeechobee is known as the Inland Sea and is the second largest lake in the US. According to the US Census Bureau in 2018, the city of Okeechobee’s population was 5,731 with an increase of only 355 from near 2 decades ago a population of 5,376 in 2,000. This has resulted in having the friendliest people and plenty of mom and pop restaurants and businesses in Okeechobee where everyone knows each other.

The city of Okeechobee is ideally located within 1 to 2 hours to the west coast and east coast of Florida and around 2 hours drive to Miami or Orlando. This proximity to the major metropolitan area has made Okeechobee a travel destination for visitors. This includes those who prefer to get out of the big cities hustle-bustle.  Life in Okeechobee means enjoying the fresh air in some of the most tranquil open lands in the state. The city of Okeechobee is the only municipality in the entire County of Okeechobee and the rest of the county is identified by the specific neighborhood they are located.

Basinger in Okeechobee, FL – Basinger is located both on Okeechobee County and across the Kissimmee River on Highland County and is the home to a confusing history combined with many ups and downs. Other spellings for Basinger include Bassinger and Basenger but the true name is Basinger, named after Lieutenant Basinger who died in the Dade massacre war with Seminole Indians at the young age of 29.
