Sarasota is a city located on the southwestern coast of Florida, about 60 miles south of Tampa. It was first documented on maps in the 1700s, and the name is variously spelled Sara Zota, Sarasote, and Sarasote. The name may have come from the Spanish word for “dancing place”. The city’s emergence as a tourist destination began after Scottish settlers arrived in the area in 1884. During this time they developed an excellent golf course. In 1902, the railroad finally arrived, bringing tourism to the city.

While Sarasota is best known for its connection to the Ringling Brothers Circus, the city offers plenty of vacation activities. For example, you can visit the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, located on City Island. Or you can go sailing, or take a tour of the city’s art galleries. Great Beaches of Sarasota

As native Floridians, we have visited many amazing beaches on both the east coast and west coast of the State. Picking the best beach is almost impossible but for us, Siesta Beach comes as close as possible. If nature watching, deep-sea fishing, and a great beach area are on your agenda the Lido Beach Park is for you. The area was the home to the Lido Casino opened in the 1940s. The City of Sarasota acquired the land after the Casino was closed. The result is a great public beach with many open parking spots and other amenities. For shell collectors may we suggest Caspersen Beach. This 1.5-mile stretch of beach on the Gulf of Mexico is equipped with a children’s playground. Other amenities include a boardwalk, canoe launching area, and outdoor showers.

Where to Shop in Sarasota

Sarasota is a popular destination for both visitors and residents of Florida. The city is home to various events and is considered an entertainment hub in Florida. Starting with St Armand’s Circle, “The Circle” area has many luxury shopping centers and dining establishments. Restaurants in the Circle area feature outdoor seating to enjoy the outdoors and passersby. Some restaurants offer live music in the evenings as well. There is a large green space that pays tribute to John Ringling and other circus greats.

Sarasota is For Animal Lovers and Tropical Gardens

Sarasota Jungle Gardens – Is one of the best fun attractions for animal lovers. This exotic attraction was originally a botanical garden. The Gardens are home to unusual plants and animals, including pink flamingos. The Garden is one of the oldest of its kind in Florida. The Jungle Garden is open year-round, and tickets are discounted online. If you’re a fan of exotic birds, then you must check out the Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

Guide Dog Training Center near Palmetto – This school trains guide dogs to assist the visually impaired, veterans, and law enforcement. Visitors can also stop by the adorable puppies at the Guide Dog Training Center’s Hug A Puppy sessions. In addition, there are guided tours of the center, which are open to the public during most morning hours.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens – Located right on the bay, this 15-acre garden is a favorite destination for plant lovers. Visitors can see a vast orchid collection, massive banyan trees, ferns, and a fish pond. The Gardens are open daily except on Christmas Day. You can combine your visit with the Sarasota Jungle Gardens, located along Bay Shore Road.
