Lakeside Inn Mount Dora FL

Most visitors miss the hidden gems like Mount Dora and choose the more famous destinations including Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Naples. As one of the oldest cities in Florida, Mount Dora is home to many historic sights. Lakeside Inn is a perfect example of the historical value of Mount Dora. This wonderful hotel first opened as Alexander House in 1883. Initially, the hotel started as a two-story structure with 10 rooms. The 1893 transfer of the ownership of Alexander House to Emma Boone resulted in the change of the name to Lakeside Inn. After the extension of the railroad to Mount Dora, Ms. Boone and her husband George Thayer expanded the existing building to accommodate more guests. As a result, a 3-story building in 1905 and another 2-story building were added to Lakeside Inn. Prior to the sale of the hotel in 1924, the Gatehouse, Boathouse, and Sunset Cottage were added to the hotel.

Preserving Lakeside Inn Mount Dora FL

During the past century, Lakeside Inn has seen ups and downs perhaps more than any other historic site in Mount Dora. The hotel hosted President Calvin Coolidge in 1930 and by 1985 was 90 days away from being demolished. Lakeside Inn was saved by a group of investors who started a major renovation project. Unfortunately, the income from Lakeside Inn could not support the cost of the renovation and the property ended up in foreclosure in 1990.
