History of Marco Island

Marco Island has a rich history dating back to the Calusa natives in 500 AD. Some of the artifacts from the Calusa natives have made their way to the Smithsonian Museum. After that, in the 1500’s the first modern-day occupants were the Spaniards who arrived in the area. Initially they named the island La Isla De San Marcos after the Gospel writer St. Mark. The Village of Marco was eventually established by William Thomas Collier in 1870. Twenty six years later the first hotel named Key Marco was opened by his son, Captain Bill Collier. Interestingly, the hotel is still operating under the name of Olde Marco Inn.

The beaches at Marco Island are much wider than most Florida beaches. The clean sugar sand, clear water, and abundance of wildlife are what to expect on these beaches. The main beach on Marco Island is called Crescent Beach. The 6 miles public beach area is one of the widest beaches in the State. There are two beach entrances with public parking off Crescent Beach. Two of the beaches are named Tigertail Beach and South Beach. Visitors must pay for parking.
